Pergeseran Dan Perubahan Makna Pada Kolom “PIYE JAL” Di Harian Suara Merdeka

Abstract

The study is aimed at describing the shifting and changing of meanings and references in  “Piye Jal†column in Suara Merdeka Daily News. This column accomodates public compaints, critiques, and opinions concerning public services, government officials, and events recently happened in the society  sent through Short Message Services. The data were taken  from  January – Februari 2009 edition. The findings inidicate that the majority of words or phrases being analyzed become extended in meanings even though there were some which were  restricted  in meanings, for example words like : bonek and demo.Most of phrases which were expanded in meanings have negative connotations since these words used to express compaints, critiques, and advice to public officials. The phrases were usually in Indonesia and Javanese languages because  it is believed that Javanese language can express the complaints more accurately.  Key Words : Shifting and changing of meaning, Piye Jal Column.
